BlogWhy Generations of Mothers Kept the Cod Liver Oil Tradition Alive

How mothers quietly kept one of the world's most enduring food traditions going, one spoonful at a time.

The Keepers of the Cupboard

She probably didn’t call it “ancestral nutrition.” She didn’t have a wellness podcast to listen to or a search engine to research what was best. She had a bottle of cod liver oil, a spoon, and the steady conviction that it was good for her family because her mother had given it to her, just as her grandmother had given it to her mother before her. That is the quiet impact a mother makes, passing things down through consistency. A spoonful every day became more than a habit. It became a generational tradition.

For centuries, mothers and caregivers have given cod liver oil to kids as part of daily family life. Long before “superfoods” entered the cultural lexicon, mothers were already acting as the stewards of their family's nutrition. They stocked the pantry with intention, remembered which remedies had earned their place on the shelf, and trusted what had been passed down through generations.

Many women kept a bottle of cod liver oil in the cupboard not because they knew every detail of the science behind it, but because experience had taught them it made the difference. In this blog post, we’ll explore the history of traditional cod liver oil, the mothers and caregivers who helped carry the tradition forward, and why this daily spoonful has remained part of modern life.

Where It All Began

The history of cod liver oil can be traced back centuries to northern Europe in Norway, Scotland, and the North Atlantic coastal cultures where cod wasn't just a fish, it was a way of life. Fishing communities in these regions recognized as early as the 18th century that oil from cod livers was a valued and practical source of nourishment in a climate where sunlight was scarce and winters were long. Families who used it seemed to value it as part of their routines, especially as seasons changed, and that was enough to pass it down.

The earliest methods of obtaining this oil were remarkably simple. Cod livers were placed in wooden barrels with some brine and left to stand. As the livers broke down naturally over time and fermented, the oil separated and rose to the surface, where it could be drawn off. This was similar to what we now call fermented cod liver oil. It is one of the oldest and most traditional methods humans have ever used to extract cod liver oil.  Our Fermented Cod Liver Oil carries the tradition forward to modern times, using fermentation to gently release the oil from the livers while preserving its naturally occurring nutrients.

A Household Staple Around The World

Like many great traditions, the cod liver oil tradition did not stay in one place; it spread far and wide. By the nineteenth century, physicians in Europe and North America were paying close attention to the benefits of cod liver oil, especially after it had been discussed in conversations around rickets, rheumatism, gout, and scrofula which was observed in Germany and introduced in the English-speaking medical world by physician John Hughes Bennett in 1841.

By the early twentieth century, traditional cod liver oil had become more than a household remedy. With the discovery of vitamins A and D, it was increasingly understood as a part of childhood nutrition. Records of the time show that cod liver oil was historically associated with playing a role in children's growth and development. Health professionals recommended mothers give cod liver oil to their kids daily, and it became closely associated with public health conversations regarding rickets, which was a major concern in crowded urban communities.

Cod liver oil was commonly given to schoolchildren as an after lunch tonic mixed with tomato juice, orange juice or with a slice of grapefruit.  In Norway, cod liver oil was included in the government-supported “Oslo Breakfast” school program from 1929 to 1963. In Canada, memories of daily cod liver oil, continued with schoolchildren in Alberta and British Columbia receiving it during the winter months.

During World War II and the years that followed, cod liver oil and vitamin D became even more formally tied to public health. In Britain, babies, children, and expectant mothers received special nutritional support, including milk, orange juice, and cod liver oil. A Ministry of Food welfare poster produced around 1945–1951 even reminded families: “Milk of course, but don’t forget cod liver oil and orange juice.” In a time of rationing, scarcity, and rebuilding, cod liver oil was considered important enough to be placed not only on the pantry shelf, but into public policy.

Traditional Cod Liver Oil Benefits Worth Passing Down

Cod liver oil has remained a trusted tradition for generations because it is a whole-food source that naturally contains vitamins A and D, along with omega fatty acids, including EPA and DHA. Together, these nutrients help explain why cod liver oil has remained part of family food traditions over time.

Vitamin D has always been especially meaningful for families living in northern climates, where long winters and limited sunlight can be part of the seasonal environment. Traditionally, cod liver oil containing vitamin D was included in household routines during darker seasons. Vitamin D has been widely discussed in medical and nutritional literature in relation to immune function, mood, and bone health, which is why it remains one of cod liver oil’s most recognized nutrients.

Vitamin A is naturally present in cod liver oil and is one of the fat-soluble vitamins found in animal foods. It is also a nutrient that plays a role in normal physiological processes, including those related to mucosal tissues such as those in the respiratory and digestive systems, and it is also discussed in relation to immune function. In the warmer months, vitamin A is often noted in nutritional literature for its role in skin-related physiological processes as the body responds to sun exposure and everyday environmental stressors.

Omega fatty acids 3, 6, 7, and 9, including EPA and DHA, have been historically discussed in relation to overall dietary balance and normal immune and inflammatory function. They are part of cod liver oil’s whole-food composition and help explain its long presence in traditional food practices. These naturally occurring fatty acids also help support the body’s normal needs through the changing rhythms of the year.

Time-honored traditions like cod liver oil continue because families choose to carry them forward. Today, many families are finding their way back to traditional foods and choosing whole-food sources like our  Fermented Cod Liver Oil.

The Spoonful Carried On For Centuries

The history of cod liver oil is about more than a supplement. It is about the way a simple daily practice can begin in one place, travel across oceans and generations, and remain alive because families knew it was worth carrying forward.

Most of all, it survived because of mothers and caregivers. These women who were given cod liver oil as children often became the ones who continued the tradition of offering cod liver oil to the next generation, sharing that same spoonful with the same quiet conviction. Not because it was trendy. Not because it was new. But because it was familiar, consistent, and rooted in care.

If you are a mother, grandmother, father, or caregiver who thinks carefully about family nutrition, who researches, asks questions, and makes intentional choices, you are part of a long and meaningful lineage. We are proud to support you in continuing this time-honored tradition with our Fermented Cod Liver Oil, one spoonful at a time.
