Our partner, Alaskan Leader, catch the skate in the Bering Sea, in the Aleutian Islands region of Alaska. The skate is wild-caught using the “Hook & Line” technique. View Our Partners page to learn more about Alaskan Leader.
Just like our cod liver oil, the quality of our skate liver oil is our top priority. Our skate liver oil is also extensively 3rd party tested. To learn more check out our Quality and Sustainability page.

The oceans of the world have always been an important source of food. With few ways of preserving this precious food source primitive people employed the use of fermentation. There are lots of articles available on this topic, here are a few from our blog posts: The Historical Roots of Fish Liver Oil, The fermenting of fish and fish by-products: fish sauces in ancient medicine and cuisine, and Historical Perspectives of Cod Liver Oil.
Fermentation is a very gentle extraction method that allows us to avoid using heat. For more interesting details visit our Fermentation page.
The fermentation process used to extract the oil is such a gentle method that it shields the natural antioxidants. View the scientific discussion about the natural antioxidants Polyphenols.

Skate is a cartilage fish that cannot grow bone. It is very closely related to sharks but is flatter in shape. The skate livers are sourced from the same region as our cod livers. We use the fermentation method to extract oil from both cod and skate livers. Our skate liver oil and cod liver oil both contain naturally occurring vitamins and omega fatty acids.
We recommend that energetic or biofeedback testing be employed to help answer this question. We have found that some simply do better with skate oil than with cod liver oil. Generally speaking, taking a little bit of both is best.
Skate is a cartilage fish, it cannot grow bone. Our understanding of how vitamin D and calcium are involved with cartilage formation is not yet fully completed. Our perspective is that each person is unique, and no two people can make any one conclusion without first investigating.

Skate liver sounds a little scary at first, but its really not, the orange flavor masks the fish taste (and Im not a fan of fish) but the syringe helps to get it past the flavor buds on my tongue. Normally I just taste a hint of orange and then drink some water-easy peasy. I ordered this after reading a book about dental health. I do feel like it has made my teeth feel a little stronger and my vision also seems to be a bit more clear.

I have been using the skate liver oil liquid for over a year now. I am now 68. I believe it is part if the reason my joints are healthy and move without pain from my mild osteoporosis. I’ve been told my knees are bone on bone but they feel great walking any distance, which is a favorite activity. I put the oil from the syringe directly to the top of a shot of orange juice and do not stir but drink it down. It floats on top and barely hits the tongue. The best way to ingest. I don’t do the capsules because I take enough supplements in capsule form and don’t want to invest anymore capsule material than possible. I will continue to take skate liver oil and consider it in my top 5 needed nutrients! Thanks fir listening.
